नेहा & NEEL

Neha (नेहा) fears she has failed to pass her language and culture down to her 17-year-old son, Neel (नील). A summer trip to visit colleges could be Neha’s last chance, if only she can get Neel to visit the historic Hope Diamond and witness a piece of Indian history for himself. In this mother-son road-trip adventure, नेहा & NEEL asks what we lose with every generation in America, and if it’s ever too late to connect with your roots.

CASTING THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS:

NEHA (नेहा)
Female, 30s-50s
South Asian or South Asian American
Fluent Hindi / Urdu speaker

  • Single mom, mid-forties, Indian/Indian American
  • Really feeling the impending separation from her son, enthusiastic about life, ready for adventure, always has something more to say

NEEL (नील)
Male / Non-binary, Teens-20s
South Asian or South Asian American

  • Neha’s son, seventeen, a rising high school senior, Indian-American / Sri Lankan-American
  • sarcastic, child of divorce, independent when he has to be, knows what he wants but doesn’t always say it

ARNAV (अर्णव) / AVATARS
Male / Non-binary, any age range
South Asian or South Asian American
Fluent Hindi / Urdu speaker

  • The actor playing Arnav also plays every other character and voice in the play.
  • ARNAV is Neel’s cousin, twenty, just entered his sophomore year of college, Indian.
  • AVATARS include various roles that span Flight Attendant to Motel Proprietor. Seeking chameleon-like comic actor who can also easily shift between authentically accented and unaccented English.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Rehearsals: September 8 – September 30
  • Understudy Start Date: Week of October 1
  • Tech: October 1-5
  • Dress Rehearsals: October 7-8
  • Previews: October 9-17
  • Opening Night: October 18 (runs Thursday-Sunday)

This production will be operating under the AEA SPT-4 contract. Actor pay is $520 per week with 30 hours of rehearsals, same rate continuing into performance weeks.
