THE DANCE AND THE RAILROAD

Set during the 1867 Central Pacific Railroad strike protesting inhuman treatment of Chinese laborers in the American West, this haunting and deeply affecting play contrasts the brutal demands of railroad work with the dream, shared by two workers, to practice traditional Chinese Opera.
CASTING THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS:
LONE
Male / Male-Presenting
20s – 30s
- Chinese railroad worker (written as 20-year-old)
- Driven, an actor back in China, a master of his craft
- Strong movement, dance, and/or martial arts experience necessary
- Knowledge of Chinese opera ideal
MA
Male / Male-Presenting
20s – 30s
- Chinese railroad worker, slightly younger than LONE (written as 18-year-old)
- Naive and gullible, but determined
- Seeking a performer with strong movement, dance, and/or martial arts experience preferred
IMPORTANT DATES
- Rehearsals: August 31–September 23
- Understudy Start Date: Week of September 24
- Tech: September 24–27
- Dress Rehearsals: September 29–30
- Previews: October 1–2
- Opening Night: October 3 (runs Thursday-Sunday)
- Student Matinees: October 21-22 at 10:30 am
- Closing Night: November 1
This production will be operating under the AEA SPT-4 contract. Actor pay is $550 per week with 30 hours of rehearsals, same rate continuing into performance weeks.
