THE DANCE AND THE RAILROAD

Set during the 1867 Central Pacific Railroad strike protesting inhuman treatment of Chinese laborers in the American West, this haunting and deeply affecting play contrasts the brutal demands of railroad work with the dream, shared by two workers, to practice traditional Chinese Opera.
CASTING THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS:
LONE
Male/Male-Presenting
Written as a 20-year-old Chinese railroad worker.
- An actor back in China, driven, a master of his craft.
- Seeking a performer with strong movement, dance, and/or martial arts experience.
- Knowledge of Chinese opera ideal.
MA
Male
Written as slightly younger than LONE, Chinese railroad worker.
- Naive and gullible, but determined.
- Seeking performer with strong movement, dance, and/or martial arts experience.
IMPORTANT DATES
- Rehearsals: August 31–September 23
- Understudy Start Date: Week of September 24
- Tech: September 24–27
- Dress Rehearsals: September 29–30
- Previews: October 1–2
- Opening Night: October 3 (runs Thursday-Sunday)
- Closing Night: November 1
This production will be operating under the AEA SPT-4 contract. Actor pay is $550 per week with 30 hours of rehearsals, same rate continuing into performance weeks.
Seeking principals and understudies for all roles.
